Temporary orthopedic implants for bone fractures must be removed by a second surgical intervention after the healing process. This leads an economic cost of 57(B)€ for hospitals and the biomedical industry in Europe, and the risks associated with the interventions. Another major problem associated with these double intervention surgeries is the risk of infection. Bacterial infections are one of the greatest challenges humanity currently confronts. This project focuses on the development of smart multilayer systems capable of degrading in the body. The multilayer system consisting of a ceramic and a porous sol-gel coatingwill be developed, where this will be functionalized with antibiotics or anti-inflammatory agents on biodegradable Mg alloy minimizing the risk of rejection by controlled release. The degradation of the system and the release of the drug will be monitored to evaluate its corrosion behavior. For next step will be the design a 3D prototype to validate in in vitro test.
