This interdisciplinary experimental research study investigates sight translation from English into French. Specifically, it aims to find out whether: i) transitional probability (i.e., the statistical likelihood of words appearing together in language) can lead to prediction, ii) there is an interpreting training/experience related advantage for prediction in sight translation, and iii) prediction affects interpreting quality. Prediction will be measured during comprehension by recording eye movements in text, and in production by recording speech interpreting latency. Moreover, existing interpreting quality metrics will be adapted to investigate the effect of prediction on the quality of the interpreted product. Findings of transitional probability effects on prediction can be indicative of default translation processes. Findings of prediction effects on interpreting quality would have important implications for translator and interpreter training.
My research focuses on predictive processes in English-French sight translation and falls under translation and interpreting process studies. I previously worked as Assistant Professor of Translation and interpreting studies at Boğaziçi University. I completed my PhD at the University of Cambridge in the UK, applying psycholinguistic methods to the investigation of predictive processes in simultaneous interpreting. I am also a trained interpreter in Macedonian (A), English (B) and German (C).
